New Hampshire's north-south trail system peters out between Mt Sunapee and trails to the north, but there are multiple ways to bridge the gap. The quickest way to get back onto sanctioned backpacking trails is to head straight north and pick up the Appalachian Trail at Moose Mountain. I call this the "Moose Mountain Express." I day-hiked the gap in 2018 using snowmobile routes, local hiking trails, and roadways, and then the following year backpacked the A.T. sections to Zealand and the Cohos Trail. Once you are on the Appalachian Trail, the route is pretty simple and there is a lot of backpacker infrastructure. I found the Franconia Ridge section to be extremely busy with thru hikers; waiting in a line for drinking water, crowding at overlooks, and sharing a tent platform. If you prefer something more remote and off the grid, try the "Ghost Trail" route instead.
