Massachusetts

Massachusetts NET

Most of the New England Trail in Massachusetts follows the old M-M Trail ("Metacomet to Monadnock"). After the trail was designated as a National Scenic Trail in 2009, many large landowners evicted the trail and long stretches could not be followed for a few years. In 2015, new NET routing was completed and it was the following summer that I began the Massachusetts section. Most of this was done slackpacking while on long weekend getaways with my husband, who played golf while I was hiking. We particularly enjoyed the Easthampton and Greenfield regions as our "base", where there were things to do in the evening.

The southern half of the Mass NET follows the trap rock ridges of the Connecticut River Valley, very similar to the Connecticut section, but that changes abruptly as the trail heads  past the Quabbin area (moose poop!) and the terrain begins to transition into the north woods.
